Netgear R8000 Recovery / Unbrick Guide
Based on the Richard Lloyd USA tutorial. This procedure restores stock Netgear firmware on a bricked router, fixes a boot loop, or removes third-party firmware (DD-WRT, OpenWRT, Fresh Tomato).
Before You Start
- Works on: Netgear R8000 (and reportedly most other Netgear routers, e.g. R7000, WNR2000v3, back to 2011-era models — command details may vary slightly).
- Power supply warning: The R8000 needs a 19V power adapter with Netgear's proprietary plug — not the common 12V barrel jack used on models like the R7000. The socket has a built-in switch, so the wrong adapter won't power the router at all. The R8500 and R9000 use the same brick (~$20–25 on eBay). Confirm you have the correct adapter before buying a used unit.
- No known vulnerabilities in the current stock firmware (as of this video's recording), but Netgear has said it will not update this model further.

Steps
1. Download the stock firmware
Search "R8000 firmware," go to Netgear's official page, and download the latest firmware version (may not be the first result). Save it to a new folder, e.g. Downloads\R8000. Extract the ZIP — you'll use the .chk file inside.
2. Download and install nmrpflash + Npcap
Search "nmrpflash," go to the GitHub repo, scroll to prebuilt binaries, and download the Windows (win32) build into the same R8000 folder. On the same GitHub page, follow the link to install Npcap, enabling WinPcap compatibility during setup.
3. Extract both ZIP files
Right-click each downloaded ZIP → Extract All → use defaults. You should now have the firmware .chk file and nmrpflash.exe in the same folder.
4. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
Type cmd in the Start menu, right-click, and choose Run as administrator.
5. Navigate to your working folder
In File Explorer, click the address bar of your R8000 folder and copy the path. In Command Prompt, type:
cd <paste path here>
Press Enter, then run dir to confirm the firmware .chk file and nmrpflash.exe are both present.
6. Get the command syntax
Run:
nmrpflash
This prints the full list of available options — keep this window scrolled up for reference.
7. Set up your hardware
- Plug an Ethernet cable into the router port directly next to the yellow WAN port.
- Connect the other end to your PC (a USB Ethernet adapter is recommended if your built-in NIC is flaky).
- Leave the router powered on — the tool needs to detect it.
8. Identify your active Ethernet interface
Turn off Wi-Fi on your PC to avoid ambiguity, then run:
nmrpflash -L
Look through the list for an interface labeled Ethernet (not Wi-Fi) with a real IP address (not a 169.254.x.x APIPA placeholder address). Note this interface name (e.g. ETH22).
9. Build the full command
Take the sample command nmrpflash printed in Step 6 and customize it:
nmrpflash -i ETH22 -f R8000-firmware.chk -t 77777 -a 192.168.1.253 -A 192.168.1.252

Note: The -a and -A address flags weren't needed on most routers the presenter tried, but were required to get the R8000 to connect reliably. Worth including for any Netgear router if the basic command doesn't work.
10. Save it as a reusable batch file (optional but recommended)
- Open Notepad, paste the full command.
- Save as rescue-r8000-tool.txt in the same folder.
- Rename the file extension from .txt to .bat (confirm the rename warning).
11. Run the flash
- Power the router off.
- Right-click the .bat file → Run as administrator (or just press Enter on the command if not using a batch file).
- Power the router back on.
- The tool will detect the router and begin flashing automatically. You'll see progress messages (e.g. "keep alive," percentage counters).
12. Watch for completion
- The LAN port light will go solid white.
- The power light will flash amber steadily.
- This indicates the flash finished successfully.
13. Reboot to stock firmware
- Power the router off, then back on.
- Allow ~5 minutes for it to fully boot into stock Netgear firmware.
14. Confirm and set up
- Go to 192.168.1.1 in a browser.
- You'll land on the Nighthawk setup app. Choose the option for "no compatible smartphone" if prompted.
- Decline "Netgear Genie" assistance if you just want manual setup.
- Set an admin password and security questions (values don't matter if you plan to reflash with third-party firmware later).
- Log in with username admin (lowercase) and your new password.
- Skip time-sync prompts if not connected to the internet.
Your router is now back on stock Netgear firmware and fully functional.
Tips & Notes
- This same nmrpflash procedure works across multiple Netgear routers (the presenter confirmed it on ~9–10 units dating back to a 2011 WNR2000v3), though exact flags may need adjusting.
- Never perform this process over Wi-Fi — wired Ethernet only.
- If buying a used R8000 (or R8500/R9000), always confirm you're getting the correct 19V power adapter — without it, the router is unusable unless you're comfortable soldering a replacement power connection.
- Good used-router sources: thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace (cheapest), eBay (pricier but more reliable for getting the right accessories).
